The Biden administration is facing increased pressure to help Cubans with critics saying the Democrats don’t want to let anyone into the country who might vote Republican.
Amid historic protests in the communist nation, Biden’s administration has made it clear to the Cuban people that they are not welcome as immigrants in his America – despite having legitimate asylum claims.
The communist Cuban government has cut off social media access on the island in an apparent attempt to stop the protests from spreading and to stop the world from seeing their response to the protesters.
Biden Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas earlier this week said that anyone who attempts to enter the U.S. via a maritime journey will not be allowed into the U.S.
“The Coast Guard, along with our state, local, and federal partners are monitoring any activity that may indicate increases in unsafe and irregular maritime migration in the Florida straits, including unpermitted vessel departures from Florida to Cuba,” Mayorkas said on Wednesday.
“The time is never right to attempt migration by sea. To those who risk their lives doing so, this risk is not worth taking. Allow me to be clear: if you take to the Sea, you will not come to the United States.”
Critics were quick to point the different tone that the Biden admin is taking compared to the southern border crisis. The country has seen a massive surge in illegal aliens entering through the U.S. / Mexico border this year and the administration has had record low level deportation numbers for illegal aliens.
Many suspect that Biden and his fellow Democrats have no political interest in helping the Cubans fleeing oppression because the majority of Cuban Americans vote for Republicans.
Donald Trump Jr. said, “DHS Secretary Mayorkas does not want legitimate asylum-seekers fleeing Cuba to come to the US despite his family having done just that. Apparently he only wants people pretending to need asylum because those people will still vote for socialist Democrats!”
Exiled Cubans and allies of the pro-democracy movement in the island nation took to the streets in Florida to demand President Joe Biden support the demonstrations challenging Cuba’s Communist regime.
Dozens of South Floridians waved Cuban flags as they gathered at the intersection and chanted “Libertad” and other messages.
The demonstrations were designed to draw the White House’s attention to what is happening in Cuba. So far, the Biden administration has issued several half-hearted statements on the matter but has not taken any overt effort to assist in the fight for democracy.
“We need Biden’s support,” one protestor told Fox News. “We haven’t gotten support from the president. So, we are trying to fight, to finish with the communism.”
“Biden, you should listen to the people here, the elected officials that are Cubans and know what is best for the people in Cuba,” another protester told media, per Fox. “So just hear us out and try to come together to see what we can do.”
Biden’s statement, issued Monday, called on the Cuban government to provide food and medicine for the Cuban people and offered lukewarm support for the protests, without directly labeling the government as “Communist.”
“We stand with the Cuban people and their clarion call for freedom and relief from the tragic grip of the pandemic and from the decades of repression and economic suffering to which they have been subjected by Cuba’s authoritarian regime,” Biden said.
