President Joe Biden embarked on what can only be described as a peculiar attack on the Second Amendment on Thursday while speaking from New York City.
The president said that as far as he’s concerned, “no amendment is absolute” before repeating a debunked claim that cannons were prohibited from being purchased by regular Americans when the amendment was passed.
“There’s no violation of the Second Amendment right,” Biden said referencing background checks and other ways to address gun crime. “We talk like. There’s no amendment that’s absolute. When the amendment was passed it didn’t say anybody can own a gun, any kind of gun, and any kind of weapon. You couldn’t buy a cannon when this amendment was passed so there’s no reason why you should be able to buy certain assault weapons. But that’s another issue.”
Biden is no stranger to this false cannon example, having used it in the past and earning “Four Pinocchios” from the Washington Post in addition to a “False” label from Politifact on separate occasions.
Additionally, Biden received backlash on Twitter from gun rights advocates who took issue with his claim that the Second Amendment is not “absolute.”
“Actually, @JoeBiden, the 2nd Amendment is absolute,” oil executive and author Dan K. Eberhart tweeted. “It’s part of the Constitution, whether you like it or not.”
“Biden targets law-abiding gun owners, saying ‘there’s NO amendment that’s absolute!’” a Republican National Committee Twitter account posted.
“Joe Biden is saying the quiet part out loud,” Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton tweeted. “I stand ready to defend Texas against any infringement of our Second Amendment his failed administration will throw at us. #2A”
“Someone didn’t read the Second Amendment,” Fox News contributor Dan Bongino’s website, the Bongino Report, posted along with an article stating that Biden’s comments should “terrify” gun owners.
“It was a lie in 2020,” Townhall’s Spencer Brown tweeted. “It was a lie in 2021. It’s still a lie today. Despite being fact checked by PolitiFact and WaPo, Biden keeps lying to the American people as he attempts to undermine the Second Amendment.”
Biden also turned heads with a claim that a “Glock with 40 rounds” is a “weapon of war.”
“Biden is the worst gun grabber in decades,” author J.D. Vance, who is running for Senate in Ohio as a Republican, tweeted. “Between this and the illegal ATF database, he’s declared war on the Second Amendment.”
Meanwhile, House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy slammed Biden for failing to condemn “soft-on-crime” politicians during his visit which was supposed to focus on crime.
McCarthy urged Americans to “entrust” Republicans with the majority of the House of Representatives in November so that they can focus on “getting criminals off the streets,” rather than getting guns out of law-abiding citizens hands which seems to be Biden’s main priority.
McCarthy said the Biden administration has embraced “soft-on-crime” policies.
“Soft-on-crime politicians are destroying our country. Both President Biden and VP Harris have indulged the soft-on-crime far left for political gain, helping create a climate hostile to law enforcement,” McCarthy said. “It has been an absolute disaster.”
“Now, Biden lacks the courage to condemn a far-left prosecutor in New York City who refuses to prosecute crime, downgrades felony charges for crimes like armed robbery, and releases criminals on low bail,” McCarthy said, referring to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
McCarthy said that, instead, Biden “poses for photos and tries to divert attention to gun control, as if guns shoot themselves.”
