Anchor Chris Cuomo, who says he had the coronavirus, “emerged” this week from his basement quarantine, claiming he has been cleared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
That is not the weird part. The weird part is that Cuomo makes it sounds as if this is his first time out of isolation since he announced on March 31 that he had been diagnosed with the virus.
Cuomo has previously admitted that he broke quarantine on Easter Sunday to take his wife and children to look at an undeveloped property in East Hampton, New York — a full 30-minute drive from their home in Southampton.
Despite this, the CNN anchor is acting like his post-CDC all-clear means that he can now, at long last, finally leave quarantine and embrace his family.
“Alright,” Cuomo says in a home video shared by CNN. “Here it is: the official reentry from the basement. … This is what I’ve been dreaming of, literally, for weeks.”
The Cuomo Prime Time official Twitter account said, “Here’s the very moment @ChrisCuomo emerged from his basement, where he’s been riding out coronavirus for the last several weeks.”
CNN’s website even hosted the video with a caption that reads, “CNN’s Chris Cuomo says he has been cleared to end his self-quarantine in his basement, a day he has been dreaming of for weeks.”
Did I miss a step? Are we using different definitions of English words? Did Cuomo “dream” of this moment before or after his 30-minute jaunt to East Hampton?

Cuomo also said this week that his wife, who he said on Wednesday had tested positive for the virus, has been cleared by the CDC.
“She doesn’t have fever. She doesn’t have the symptoms anymore — more than seven days from her quarantine,” Cuomo says in the home video.
He adds, “This is the dream, just to be back up here doing normal things. … Thank you for being so nice to me. Thank you for taking care of everything you had to. Thank you for taking care of me.”
What am I missing here?
When he and his family went to East Hampton, potentially spreading the virus to new clusters of people in another town, Cuomo even got into a confrontation with a cyclist who rightly demanded to know why the COVID-19 patient was breaking the quarantine rules imposed by his own brother, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
But the way the CNN anchor is telling it now, you would think that he had not left his basement since his alleged March 31 diagnosis. Is this part of an elaborate prank?
No. This is CNN.
