Dr. Anthony Fauci, who is the current director of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases and the current Chief Medical Advisor to U.S. President Joe Biden, hit back on Sunday against a new politically embarrassing claim made by VP Kamala Harris during her interview last week.
Fauci went against the comments that Harris made during her LA Times interview where she said the administration failed to predict the rise in covid variants.
“We did not see Delta coming. I believe most scientists would not — upon whose advice and direction we have depended on — did not see Delta coming,” Harris told the LA Times during an interview. “We did not see Omicron coming. And that is the nature of what this awful virus was, which as it happens, has variants.”
The Times said:
“President Biden celebrated our “independence” from the covid virus in a July 4 speech, stating that, “While the virus has not yet been vanquished, we know this: It is not controlling our lives any longer. It no longer paralyzes our country. And it is within our power to ensure it never does again.”
“At this time, some public health experts had warned that his optimism was too early, given that the Delta variant was a large threat. Harris denied that the White House declared victory too early, or ever.”
“We have not been totally victorious over it,” Harris said. “I don’t believe in any regard anyone can say that victory when, you know, there are now 800,000 people dead because of the virus.”
Fauci replied to Harris’ comments during an interview this Sunday on CNN’s show called “State of the Union.”
“We definitely knew the variants were coming,” Fauci said. “What was not predicted was the extent of these mutations in the amino acid substitutions in the omicron variant, which was truly unprecedented.”
This comes at a time when Kamala Harris has experienced a falling approval rating and public embarrassment after leaks from her team revealed internal conflict among her team and herself. Many suspect that Kamala will not run for president in 2024 if Biden does not run.
