Dr. Anthony Fauci, lead coronavirus adviser to President Biden, warned this Sunday that another lockdown could become reality if covid cases spike in the country as states start lifting covid-related restrictions.
Fauci’s words come as covid cases increase across Europe. With Italian leaders saying they would enact a lockdown starting Monday through Easter weekend, while top German leaders said Europe’s “third wave” of covid infections is now happening, CNBC reported.
Despite a large decline in coronavirus cases, Fauci said on Fox News this is “no time to declare victory.”
“We understand from previous increases that when you get a leveling off there is always the danger of a return surge,” Fauci said. “That’s exactly what is occurring in Europe right now.”
Stopping the pandemic restrictions is “ill-advised,” according to Dr. Fauci, who said that Texas lifting its mask requirement is “possibly dangerous.”
During an interview on CNN, Fauci restated his belief that lifting restrictions led to the new spike in Europe.
“That’s exactly what occurred in Europe. They had a decrease in cases, they leveled off, and they stopped certain health measures. They opened restaurants, bars and stopped wearing masks. And suddenly, you have an increase. And that’s where we are right now.”
