A group of House GOP members are urging FBI Director Christopher Wray to give any information he can on past connections between Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., and an alleged Chinese spy.
In December it was reported that an alleged spy named Christine Fang or Fang Fang targeted Swalwell and other politicians and helped to raise money for the congressman’s reelection.
“As our country faces a growing threat from Chinese attempts to infiltrate the government, we request a briefing about threats to Members of Congress, including information regarding Rep. Eric Swalwell’s connections to a suspected Chinese intelligence officer,” wrote the 14 GOP House members, including Representative Dan Bishop, R-N.C. and John Katko, R-N.Y., a member of the Homeland Security Committee.
They stressed that Swalwell is on the House Homeland Security Committee and gets classified information, “which would cause very severe damage to our national security’ if it were subject to unauthorized reveal.”
The group also highlighted that House Speaker Pelosi, D-Calif., and House Minority Leader McCarthy, R-Calif., both got a classified briefing that draws scrutiny over “how Rep. Swalwell could have been re-appointed to the Committee on Homeland Security just one month after this information being shared.”
Swalwell spoke to reporters and said “It seems this person was not successful in what they were attempting to do. But if lawmakers are trying to turn someone’s cooperation against them, they are pretty much doing the same thing, which is to try to discredit someone.”
