Vice President Kamala Harris has certainly fallen from grace within the Democratic party, and now her own staff is starting to quit on her.
Harris’ communications director resigned on Thursday as the VP’s poll numbers sank to a historic low, with many suggesting that Kamala may soon be booted from the White House.
Ashley Etienne resigned on Thursday and her resignation will take effect next month.
“Ashley is a valued member of the Vice President’s team, who has worked tirelessly to advance the goals of this administration,” a White House official told Fox News. “She is leaving the office in December to pursue other opportunities.”
Etienne, a longtime top adviser to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, served as Pelosi’s communications director twice, sandwiched in between time in the Obama White House.
The White House has struggled in recent days in the wake of a recent scathing CNN report that outlined frustration and dysfunction in Harris’ office. The article cited nearly three dozen officials in Harris’ office and the White House as their sources, and few had nice things to say.
“Defenders and people who care for Harris are getting frantic. When they’re annoyed, some pass around a recent Onion story mocking her lack of more substantive work, one with the headline, ‘White House Urges Kamala Harris To Sit At Computer All Day In Case Emails Come Through.’ When they’re depressed, they bat down the Aaron Sorkin-style rumor that Biden might try to replace her by nominating her to a Supreme Court vacancy. That chatter has already reached top levels of the Biden orbit, according to one person who’s heard it,” CNN reported.
The CNN piece ruffled some feathers in the White House, as it hit what must have been an already sore spot.
Press secretary Jen Psaki tweeted out a defense of the vice president that appeared to be in direct response to the article. Harris’ approval rating was a dismal 28% in one recent survey, a historically bad number for a vice president.
ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos also recently asked the vice president if she feels “misused or underused” by the Biden administration. She laughed in response.
“No, I don’t,” the vice president said.
Critics have previously attacked Harris for laughing when she is faced with tough or uncomfortable questions. In June, she famously laughed when NBC News anchor Lester Holt asked if she planned to visit the southern border of the United States after President Biden tasked her with discovering the root cause of crisis-level immigration. She laughed at a similar question in March.
Fox News host Jesse Watters said Tuesday that President Joe Biden may be considering removing Kamala Harris as vice president, saying his network has heard “whispers” that confirmation hearings are coming up in Congress.
“Our Capitol Hill Correspondent Chad Pergram tells us he’s been hearing whispers suggesting there could be some new high-profile confirmation hearings on the horizon in the House of Representatives,” Watters said on Fox.
“Why is this a big deal? Because the house does not confirm normal nominees. But it does confirm vice-presidential nominees. Does this have something to do with Kamala Harris? It’s been no secret she’s been running out of favor with the Biden team.”
“There is a lot of conjecture right now about the future of Vice President Harris and her lagging poll numbers, So I got a message recently from someone who knows Capitol Hill very well and they suggested I should familiarize myself with the process to confirm a vacancy for the vice president in the Senate and in the House.”
