President Donald Trump railed against a report being circulated by the heavily biased mainstream media that claims the president paid only $750 in federal income taxes in 2016 and 2017.
“It’s fake news. It’s totally fake news,” said Trump in White House press briefing after he was asked about a report containing the allegation. “Everything was wrong, they are so bad. Made up. Fake.”
The rumor was started by the New York Times who, citing “anonymous sources,” claimed to have secured the president’s tax history.
The Times report alleges that the president paid no federal income taxes in 11 of 18 years which the president, along with Trump organization lawyer Alan Garten, insists is simply false.
President Trump added that he’s unable to release his financial records because he’s under audit by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), but stated that he would be “proud to show them” when he was no longer under audit.
“It’s under audit. They’ve been under audit for a long time,” he said. “The IRS does not treat me well. When they’re not [under audit], I would be proud to show [them].”
The president remarked that he paid a considerable amount of taxes over the years. “First of all, I paid a lot,” he said. “I paid a lot of state income taxes too. New York State charges a lot.”
That information will be released in due time, said Trump, adding that it will only be done when the audit is finished.
“It’ll all be revealed,” he said. “I look forward to releasing many things. I’m going to release many things and people will be really shocked.”
“The IRS does not treat me well. They treat me like the Tea Party,” he said, making reference to allegations that the IRS had been unjustly targeting Republican-leaning groups while Obama was in office.
Garten issued a statement to the Times over false allegations, saying that “most, if not all, of the facts appear to be inaccurate”
“Over the past decade, President Trump has paid tens of millions of dollars in personal taxes to the federal government, including paying millions in personal taxes since announcing his candidacy in 2015,” Garten said
Garten continued, “While we tried to explain this to the Times, they refused to listen and rejected our repeated request that they show us any of the documentation they purport to be relying on to substantiate their claims.”
“Obviously this is just part of the Times’ ongoing smear campaign in the run up to the election,” he added.
The New York Times – known for publishing extremely biased hit pieces on the president – did not release the copies of Trump’s tax filings they had received, claiming to be “protecting their sources.”
Left-leaning media outlets and politicians have been obsessed with the president’s taxes over the past four years as they desperately search for something to take him down while peddling hate rather than simply garnering real support for their policies as Trump has.
