Sen. Mitt Romney condemned President Trump’s firings of four government watchdogs in recent weeks.

“The firings of multiple Inspectors General is unprecedented; doing so without good cause chills the independence essential to their purpose. It is a threat to accountable democracy and a fissure in the constitutional balance of power,” the Utah Republican tweeted Saturday night.

Romney’s comment followed Trump’s Friday night ouster of State Department Inspector General Steve Linick, his latest firing of an independent government watchdog since his impeachment and acquittal.

House Democrats have launched an investigation into Linick’s firing. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel said Linick was investigating Secretary of State Mike Pompeo when he was removed. A White House official said Pompeo recommended the move, and Trump agreed.

Romney was the only Republican in the Senate who voted to convict Trump of abuse of power earlier this year. The president was acquitted by the Republican-controlled Senate.
