Rep. Rashida Tlaib Tells Feds Helping Subdue Rioters They’ll Have To Arrest Her First. Nobody Argues

Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s threat over federal intervention in her state backfired into a wave of support for her arrest.

The Michigan Democrat took a stand against President Trump’s reported plan to send more federal law enforcement to deal with civil unrest in cities like New York, Detroit and Chicago, declaring that federal agents would have to get through her first before they “lay their hands” on any Michigan residents.

“They’ll have to arrest me first if they think they’re going to illegally lay their hands on my residents,” the progressive member of the “Squad” tweeted Monday, linking to a report from The Hill.

Trump spoke with reporters Monday about the ongoing protests and rioting in major U.S. cities, praising federal law enforcement agents in Portland, Ore., where the city has been trashed after weeks of violent protests. But the president remarked about how police, especially in New York City, have been hampered by local governments from doing their jobs, vowing to deploy federal police to help quell the violence in many locations where law enforcement is overwhelmed.

“I’m going to do something — that, I can tell you,” he said. “Because we’re not going to let New York and Chicago and Philadelphia and Detroit and Baltimore and all of these — Oakland is a mess.”

Democrats have slammed the Trump’s efforts and a lawsuit has been filed claiming federal officials “make it impossible” for the rioters to exercise their First Amendment rights “to protest peacefully.” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi slammed “Trump’s stormtroopers” who are “kidnapping protesters” in Portland and declared it “must be stopped.”

“If Democratic officials would focus more on restoring peace to American cities and less on defunding the police and condoning rioting, a federal presence would not be necessary,” GOP Rep. James Comer of Kentucky responded to the Democrats’ whining.

Meanwhile, Tlaib’s declaration that she would have to be arrested before federal officers could “illegally” lay a hand on any of her constituents had a resounding response on Twitter. However, it was probably not the reaction the Democrat was expecting, as social media users overwhelmingly agreed.

Many reminded Tlaib, who is facing a tough Democratic challenge leading up to an Aug. 4 primary, that people who break the law get arrested.

And plenty of Twitter users applauded Tlaib’s stand, looking forward to a federal response.
