Former presidential hopeful Beto O’Rourke accused Texas’s GOP Governor Greg Abbott of purposefully sacrificing lives for political gain by choosing to fully reopen his state’s economy.
“They want to sacrifice their fellow Texans,” O’Rourke said to MSNBC in response to the governor’s decision to reopen Texas and lift all restrictions. “For, maybe political gain or for certain interests in the state.”
O’Rourke claimed his comments were not hyperbole and said the GOP was a “cult of death.”
The former lawmaker also went for Abbott on Twitter and said he was killing people with his incompetence throughout the pandemic as well as during the recent bad weather that left millions of people without power and dozens of people dead.
O’Rourke tweeted: “Add these names to the list of over 44,000+ who were killed as the governor did not deal with the pandemic while also botching the vaccines. And them to those who froze because he cares more about energy companies than keeping people alive. Abbott is killing Texans.”
During a press conference this week, Abbott announced that Texas will be “fully opened” and that businesses who choose to open can now do it. The GOP governor also said Texas’ mask mandates will be ended.
