Republican Senator Ted Cruz (TX) accused Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (MN) of “acting as a press secretary for Hamas,” the Palestinian terror group, after she tweeted false information about recent events in the region.
Omar, who is very anti-Israel, and has a history of antisemitic comments, tweeted on Monday:
Omar was replying to the news that 20 Palestinians were killed by Israeli airstrikes, including 9 children. What this news report did not mention was that Israel said it had killed 11 Hamas fighters who fired rockets at Israelis. The attack was aimed at Jerusalem, where Palestinians rioted recently, with the encouragement of Palestinian groups and leaders. Earlier on Monday, a Palestinian mob tried to lynch an Israeli driver.
Hamas is known for firing rockets at Israel from very populated areas within Gaza, putting civilians at risk, and also using civilians as human shields to guard terrorists and weapons. Israel’s missile defense system, called the Iron Dome, intercepted many — but not all — of the over 150 rockets fired on Monday night. Congresswoman Omar complained that Palestinians were without such a system, failing to note that Israeli is not firing rockets at Palestinians.
Senator Cruz asked: “Why is a Member of the United States Congress behaving like the press secretary for Hamas? Does President Biden agree?”
Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), who has more extreme opinions than Congresswoman Omar about Israel, said that we should not give billions in aid to Israel, because of its “dehumanization and racism.”
Rep. Omar is on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and was actually promoted to a leadership role recently, despite her views.
