Florida Democrat Charlie Crist, who was Florida’s governor between 2007 to 2011, announced on Tuesday through Twitter that he was running for governor again.
“Florida should be a state where justice is equal, hard work is rewarded, and opportunity is everywhere,” he said. “A Florida for everyone — and that’s why I am running for Governor.”
He created his website CharlieCrist.com, officially starting his run against Governor Ron DeSantis.
“From St. Pete to Washington, Charlie Crist has been working for people his entire life,” his campaign webpage says.
The campaign will be his third attempt at the governorship and his seventh shot at a state office in his political career of more than thirty years.
Will Governor DeSantis win re-election in 2022? Crist has been critical of DeSantis and took aim at him in a tweet on Monday before his big announcement.
Crist was elected in 2006 as governor as a Republican. He then lost in 2014 running as a Democrat against former Governor Rick Scott. In 2016, he was elected into congress as a Democrat.
If he wins the Democratic primary, he will then face off against DeSantis in 2022.
